Astana was founded in 1830. The fortress around which the city grew was originally named Akmola. The first airport in Akmola was constructed in 1935.
In December 1997, Akmola became the capital of Kazakhstan, and in May 1998 the city was renamed Astana. Akmola airport also changed its name to Astana International Airport (IATA: TSE, ICAO: UACC). In 2017, Astana International Airport changed its name to Nursultan Nazarbayev Airport, while in spring 2019, it was decided to rename Astana to Nur-Sultan.
